¼ cup shortening
1 cup hot water
6 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 package yeast; dissolved
3 to 3½ cups flour (enough to make a stiff dough)
1 egg; well beaten
Mix shortening, hot water, sugar, and salt. Let cool and add beaten egg, yeast, and flour. Knead lightly and let rise for 2 to 2½ hours, or until double in bulk on a floured board. Work dough down. Cut into small balls, flatten out, place in greased pan, and let rise at least two hours. Bake in moderate oven till brown.
